Wilder has used this film as a terrific parody of gangster films paying homage to Cagney with a reference to Spats throwing a grapefruit at one of his henchman ala "Public Enemy" (1931), and Raft making fun of himself with the famous coin flipping scene, saying "Where did you pick up that cheap trick". He picked it up in "Scarface" (1932). The full title is "Scarface, Shame of the Nation".

The last competition is the Boat Race where all five Americans line up along the side of a table, looking across the table at five Germans who are lined up similarly. Each player has to chug beer from their own Das Boot, drinking in succession until the last player (called the "anchor") finally chugs. Unfortunatley for the Germans, their anchor leaves a drop of beer in the glass, giving USA the win. Go Team USA!

One of the most interesting edits in motion picture history, and one you have to be on your toes to catch, happens when Major Kong (Pickens) finishes reading off the list of items in the survival kit. His original line was, "A fella could have a pretty good weekend in Dallas with all that stuff." Because "Dr. Strangelove" was completed just after the Kennedy assassination, the word "Vegas" was dubbed in for "Dallas".

I didn't really know of paraffin oil. I've only known of paraffin as a thick waxy substance, that can be used to make fire starters (ah, the good old days of Girl Scouts!). In Smith's 1903 film, Mary Jane, as played by Smith's wife, first inadvertently gives herself a soot mustache, which she rather seems to enjoy. Then she proceeds to blow herself up (and, presumably, the home).

Harry Hartounian (played by Jackie Mason) said this after Navin burst into jubilation when the new phone book arrived. He knew he was going to be somebody now. Neal (Steve Martin) walked up to the car rental desk, wet and dirty after his walk down a highway and across a runway, and the receptionist said, "Welcome to Marathon. May I help you?" He was pretty irate with his previous misfortunes and let many expletitives fly, which are unprintable on this site.



"Planes, Trains And Automobiles" was about a guy trying to get home for Thanksgiving. Thanks to bad weather, he had trouble making it on time. He also met up with an annoying salesman named Dale Griffith (John Candy) who accompanied him on most of the trip. The pair had several unfortunate, but hilarious, things happen to them along the way. This film was released in 1987.

Though the judge was later pushed out of the helicopter, only one woman was pushed out of the courthouse window.

This is a scam that Simon comes up with to get Helen. It is apparently a covert operation where they have to be married. This is all stopped, luckily, when Harry and his team break in and take them away.
