Palpatine was originally the senator of Naboo and then succeeded Valorum in a vote-of-no-confidence issued by Queen Amidala. Palpatine acquired an army of the Republic when Representative Jar Jar Binks gave him emergency powers. Using this army of clones, he ensured order and loyalty using sheer force. He issued what he called the ‘New Order’ and became Emperor. He was killed in the Battle of Endor by Anakin Skywalker by falling into the main reactor of the Second Death Star.

What Anakin proposed, in theorem, would be good for the people, as it would make sure that the majority opinion would be enforced. However, in reality, the good of the people is not always on the agenda, as evidenced when Anakin becomes Darth Vader and makes good on his suggestion. Fear becomes the motivating factor instead of "the good of the people" and the bumbling senate is eventually dissolved.

This is a line that not many people hear because he says it so quietly. You can guess that he's talking about Obi-Wan, because Obi-Wan is on the Falcon when the tractor beam pulls it in. He can tell by the Force whose presence it is.

Han Solo originally wins it from Lando in the 'Han Solo' trilogy but loses it in the 'Jedi Academy' trilogy to Lando, winning it back again a short time later and then losing it again to Lando. Lando then returns it to Han trying to impress Mara Jade.
