Tough "Trek" Trivia - On what date did Gene Roddenberry die?
The correct answer is 'October 24, 1991'
Born in El Paso, Texas, on August 19, 1921, The Great Bird passed away from a heart attack on October 24, 1991, on the Los Angeles area. A small portion of his remains, which were cremated, were shot into space from a rocket launched at Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, a few years later. His memory was honored at the beginning of both parts of "Unification", the "TNG" episode in which Spock, now an ambassador, is suspected of defecting to Romulus. This was a fitting tribute, because Spock was Gene Roddenberry's favorite "Star Trek" character.
NOTE -- According to the text commentary provided by Michael Okuda for the DVD release of "Star Trek VI", Gene Roddenberry's death was on October 12, 1991. This information, however, is incorrect. I have conducted research at four different sources to verify Gene Roddenberry's death as October 24, 1991:
www.rootsweb.com -- basic information from official vital records
www.imdb.com
www.findagrave.com
The online archives of the Los Angeles Times.
